Ferrous metals are metals contain iron (Fe)as their primary component usually. The word ”ferrous” comes from the Latin word-ferrum, which means iron(Fe). These metals also includes chromium(Cr), magnesium(Mn) as well as theirs alloys. The chromium(Cr) comes from the Greek work for”color” because of its own color, it is steel-gray metal which is the hardest metal in nature. The magnesium(Mn) is one very important industrial metallic material, which usually use as the additive to alloys to improve the strength, hardness, wear resistance, elastic limit and corrosion resistance of steel.

Main features of ferrous metals:

1.Main component: iron(Fe)

2. Magnetic, most of them are attached to magnets.

3.High durability and strength.

4.Prone to ruse.

5.Recyclable.

Main types of Ferrous Metals:

1.Pure Iron (Wrought Iron)。

2.Carbon Steel.

3.Cast Iron.

4.Stainless Steel.

5.Alloy Steel.

Common uses of ferrous metals: construction, automotive, railways & ships, machinery & tools, household Item..

Ferrous vs. Non-Ferrous Metals

Contain iron vs No iron (e.g., Al, Cu, Zn)

Magnetic (mostly) vs Non-magnetic

Heavier vs Lighter

Rusts (except stainless steel) vs Corrosion-resistant
